During a specialised operation of the Sofia Directorate of the Interior, 29 people were detained for possession and distribution of various types and quantities of narcotic substances, the Interior Ministry said in a press release Saturday. Fast-track proceedings have been initiated in the cases.

The operation was carried out from February 25 to 27 in the areas around schools and entertainment establishments, as well as in places where data indicated presence of the criminal contingent.

Three men were arrested in Sofia's Lyulin 5 residential district after information was received they were distributing drugs. The arrested are aged 44, 19, and 17, one with a criminal record for theft and another with a previous drug conviction. Near them, concealed in a car tyre, the police patrol found 76 pellets of brown and white powdery substances. Pre-trial proceedings have been initiated.

In the Nadezhda 1 residential district, the police arrested a 35-year-old man, known in the past for thefts, after a check found him in possession of some 8.49 grammes of synthetic cannabinoids. Charges have been brought against him.

In downtown Sofia, the police detained a 38-year-old man, caught driving after using drugs and having amphetamine in his possession, and four persons in possession of marijuana and amphetamines.

Among the arrested within the specialised operation are also a 35-year-old man with a criminal record and a Syrian national with a humanitarian status, both found in possession of heroin during the police check.
