Bulgaria's Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev talked with Egypt's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates, Badr Abdelatty, on the telephone on Wednesday, the Foreign Ministry said. The conversation established a new working contact between the two ministers, based on mutual trust and support, which is in line with the long-standing friendly relations between Bulgaria and Egypt.
The two ministers discussed the progress in bilateral relations and noted the positive trend in their development in recent years. They highlighted the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between their countries, which will be marked in 2026.
The two ministers agreed to set specific periods in 2025 for a new round of political consultations, as well as for the next sessions of the Joint Committee for Economic Cooperation and the Joint Cooperation Committee. These initiatives will give a fresh impetus to the development of bilateral relations in areas of mutual interest.
Abdelatty briefed Georgiev on key aspects of Egypt's new plan for Gaza and noted that consultations with friendly countries were planned before it is presented to the US and the international community. In this context, Egypt emphasized the importance of partnerships with EU countries, including Bulgaria.
Georgiev highlighted Egypt's key role in the efforts for de-escalation and stabilization in the Middle East, stating Bulgaria's firm commitment to support the international efforts to achieve sustainable peace and strengthen security in the region.
The two ministers agreed to meet in the near future. They affirmed their countries' readiness to continue and deepen the active political dialogue at all levels.
Egypt was the first Arab country with which Bulgaria established diplomatic relations on February 3, 1926. It is Bulgaria's largest trading and economic partner in the Middle East and Africa. The two countries have maintained an active political dialogue, which is conditioned by Egypt's significant geopolitical importance in the region, the Foreign Ministry said on its website.
