The National Assembly Wednesday passed on second reading a bill providing financial support to household end customers affected by power outages during the Christmas and New Year holidays between December 21 and 31, 2024.

Eligible for financial assistance are individuals who experienced power outages lasting more than 24 hours during the specified period. Within three days of the law’s enactment, the Council of Ministers must adopt a programme outlining the conditions and procedures for providing the targeted financial aid.

Between December 21 and 24, 2024, an average of 31 localities were affected, leaving approximately 4,658 consumers without electricity. A significant increase occurred between December 25 and 27, with the number of affected localities rising to 280 and the number of customers without power reaching 42,350. As of December 28, there were still 209 localities and 19,745 customers without electricity.

The bill was introduced on February 12 by MPs Pavela Mitova (There Is Such a People), Delyan Dobrev (GERB-UDF), Dragomir Stoynev (Bulgarian Socialist Party – United Left), and Ramadan Atalay (Democracy, Rights and Freedoms).
