Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev met here Thursday with the former Executive Director of the American Jewish Committee, David Harris, the Foreign Ministry said in a press release on Thursday.

The meeting provided an opportunity to present Bulgaria’s efforts and achievements in countering antisemitism, including the adoption of the country's first National Action Plan for Combating Antisemitism (2023-2027) in 2023. It also reviewed Bulgaria’s commitments as a full member of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA).

Minister Georgiev highly praised the fruitful cooperation with the American Jewish Committee over the years and reaffirmed Bulgaria’s commitment to further efforts and contributions in the fight against antisemitism. Both parties confirmed their readiness to continue their close collaboration to deepen their partnership further.

Bulgaria’s top diplomat also highlighted Mr. David Harris’s efforts to present Bulgaria in the best possible light to the American and international public. Particularly noteworthy is his campaign promoting Bulgaria as an attractive tourist destination under the iconic slogan: “Bulgaria? Yes, Bulgaria!”

A few days ago, on the social media platform X, David Harris shared a most positive message for Bulgaria.

"Why am I a fan of Bulgaria? Key US ally in strategically vital Black Sea region; NATO member paying its fair share; Home to neighboring church/mosque/synagogue; Rescue of 50,000 Bulgarian Jews in WW2; Friend of Israel; Warm, welcoming, talented people; Beautiful country," posted Harris.

The American Jewish Committee (AJC) is one of the most authoritative and influential American Jewish organizations, with which Bulgaria maintains a traditionally active dialogue. Throughout his distinguished career, David Harris has been a dedicated advocate in the fight against antisemitism and hate speech, as well as a strong supporter of human rights. He has also made significant contributions to strengthening bilateral relations between Bulgaria and the United States.

David Harris’s visit to Bulgaria coincides with the International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27, as well as the presentation of the Bulgarian edition of his book, "On the Front Line: A Lifetime of Global Jewish Advocacy."
