Residents of several municipalities of the northeastern region of Shumen protested on Tuesday in the regional city against investment intentions to build wind power plants on agricultural land.

The protest was organized by the Clean Nature Association and took place in front of the building of the Shumen Regional Environment and Water Inspection (REWI), as well as the building of the Shumen Regional Administration.

"There are already five such wind generator farms on the territory of Shumen Region, and 130 huge facilities will be built from Hitrino upwards, which will surely affect these poor people, who cannot be constantly on the Internet to monitor when public discussions are held and when not," stressed Maria Valchanova from the association, who added that the protest is also against the construction of a wind farm with 50 wind generators located in nine settlements in two municipalities.

She said that this will happen if, on Wednesday, an expert council of the REWI Shumen gives a green light on the environmental impact assessment report, after which the regional governor of Shumen will be able to change the purpose of the land from agricultural to industrial.

The protesters were met by Shumen Regional Governor Beinur Ahmed to discuss the demands they want to see implemented. "We have written many complaints, no one pays attention to us. We are waiting for MPs to hear us", commented the protesters and specified that the protest is not only against another 50 wind generators, but against the complete neglect of the problem in Bulgaria.
