Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev convened a working meeting in the Council of Ministers on the subject of Schengen on Thursday, the Government's press service said.

By order of the Prime Minister, the process of reorganizing work on the borders was launched last month. The Prime Minister formed a taskforce composed of all competent institutions, so that from January 1, 2025, our country would be fully prepared to function in the Schengen area, if a positive decision is reached in Brussels for Bulgaria to join.

During Thursday's meeting, Prime Minister Glavchev will report on what has been done so far on the reorganization of the borders with Romania and Greece. The focus of the meeting will be the measures taken so that the control activities currently carried out at the borders can be gradually transferred to the interior of the country, without allowing chaos with traffic.

The EU Council will vote at around 11:00 am Bulgarian time on Thursday a decision to abolish checks at the land Schengen borders of Bulgaria and Romania from January 1, 2025. The decision is set as the first item on the agenda for the meeting of European interior ministers in Brussels.
