Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) has asked the Constitutional Court to interpret a constitutional provision under which the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) in its present composition can elect the Prosecutor General and the President of the Supreme Administrative Court, MP and former justice minister Atanas Slavov told reporters.

Slavov said the provision needs to be interpreted because "an SJC whose term of office has expired and is fully delegitimized in the public eye" cannot be trusted to go ahead with such an important election.

On November 28, GERB-UDF asked the Court, among other things, whether the SJC can fully exercise its constitutional powers after its term has expired and whether Parliament is permitted to limit these powers considering the expired mandate.

Representatives of the legal profession have staged a series of protests against the election of the Prosecutor General and the Supreme Administrative Court President by the current SJC.
