Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev has signed a memorandum for sustainable management of the Perlovska River, said the Sofia Municipality on its website on Monday. Terziev noted that the Perlovska River is very important for the city and its future, which is why it is just as important what everyone does to protect it. He pointed out that drought and floods cause significant damage and have to be dealt with, so water resources must be taken seriously.
The mayor also stressed that rivers are not a given, and they require urban planning, solutions, vision and overall attitude. "Over the years, the attitude has ranged from careless to barbaric. The City Hall will work with everyone to achieve better results together", Terziev said.
He emphasised that Sofia Municipality has cleaned 4,410 metres of the Perlovska River in 2024, adding that despite its modest size, the river is important for the development, ecology and cultural identity of the city. It is expected that in 2025 more than double that length of the river will be cleaned. The bridges on the Perlovska River are to be repaired as well.
Over the years, parks, bicycle lanes and green areas have been built around the river, which have become favourite places for rest and activities for the city's residents.
