site.btaWorld Diabetes Day: Over 500 Screened for Diabetes at Military Medical Academy
More than 500 people took advantage of free consultations and screening with doctors from the Clinic of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases at the Military Medical Academy (MMA) on World Diabetes Day, November 14, MMA said in a press release here on Thursday.
World Diabetes Day is observed annually on November 14, as established by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization, due to growing concerns about the future of millions living with the disease.
More than 700,000 Bulgarians are affected by this socially significant disease, and many are unaware of their condition. To raise public awareness and promote early diagnosis, doctors from the MMA organize various preventive campaigns each year.
Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder marked by high blood glucose levels. This can occur due to either a partial decrease or impaired function of insulin (type 2 diabetes) or a complete lack of insulin production (type 1 diabetes). Effective treatment can lessen disabling complications and improve patients' quality of life, MMA said.
