The US is a key strategic partner of the EU and both countries should continue efforts to build on this relationship, Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev said in Budapest ahead of an informal European Council meeting, quoted by the government information service on Thursday. At a working dinner later in the day, leaders will discuss a number of topics, including EU-US relations. "I do not expect any surprises. In view of the change of administration, we should make more efforts for faster contact. The direction is clear," said Glavchev. The Prime Minister also focused on the excellent bilateral relations between Bulgaria and the US.

Of US visa waiver, the Prime Minister recalled that there are strict criteria that have to be met. One of them is the refusal rate, which for Bulgaria is still high, but the trend is towards a decrease. The Prime Minister noted that the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry is conducting an information campaign on the issue. “We are working very actively in order to meet all the criteria,” Glavchev added.

Asked about Bulgaria's accession of Schengen by land, the Prime Minister said that talks are underway and a positive sign is expected from Austria and the other member states. “We expect such a decision soon, but let's go ahead of events,” Glavchev added. The Prime Minister was adamant that if restrictions are lifted for Romania, they will be lifted for Bulgaria as well.
