The eastern front of the fire in the Slavyanka mountain range on the Bulgarian-Greek border is almost contained, with fire fighters keeping it from igniting again, said on Friday Petko Angelov, head of the protection of forested territories department at the Southwestern State Enterprise. He said that on the western front, the fire has almost been suppressed.
On Friday, forestry workers, firefighters and military personnel, as well as the two Spanish airplanes are on the ground to fight the fire in the Slavyanka Mountain. Both Spanish aircraft are expected to be involved in the fight against the fire, so that they can help from the air, said Angelov.
“If the weather conditions remain calm, perhaps today [Friday] we will be successful in containing the fire and controlling it in the next days”, he said, adding that for the time being, there is no risk of the fire spreading to populated areas.
