Parliament ratified on Thursday an international treaty on the acquisition of ammunition for Stryker vehicles. 125 MPs voted in favour and 51 against. The contract from the US government is worth a total of USD 64,880,655 excluding VAT. Caretaker Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov and Chief of Defence Admiral Emil Eftimov were present at the vote.
The draft contract was received by the Defence Ministry in response to a request letter sent in May 2023, the report read by the chairman of the parliamentary defence committee Hristo Gadzhev said. It has been approved by the Council of Ministers as the basis for negotiations in connection with the implementation of the 49th National Assembly's decision to adopt an investment expenditure project for the acquisition of major combat equipment for the construction of battalion battle groups of a mechanised brigade.
According to the decision of the National Assembly, the overall implementation of the investment expenditure project is to be carried out through the execution of three contracts: a contract for the acquisition of Stryker vehicles, a contract for the acquisition of artillery and small arms, and subsequently through a contract for the acquisition of Javelin anti-tank guided missiles.
