Meeting with European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) President Oliver Roepke on Friday, President Rumen Radev said improving the socio-economic environment in Bulgaria is key to curbing the negative demographic processes. The improvements will also encourage more young people to develop their potential in the country, the President's Press Secretariat said.

Radev and Roepke discussed the challenges facing the Single European Labour Market in the context of digital transformation and the transition to a green economy. The EESC is an EU body which ensures that policies and legal provisions applied within the Community are tailored to the economic and social conditions of the individual Member States, the press release said.

Radev said the transition to a green economy should be based on a balance; it should take into account the social impact and not harm the welfare of European citizens and the competitiveness of the EU economy. "The integration of green policies should not be done in a way and at a speed that would lower people's living standards; on the contrary, it should be done with a view to improving them." The Bulgarian President said the serious economic challenges include military action near the EU borders, to which a peaceful solution must be sought in line with international law.

Radev and Roepke concurred that Bulgaria's entry in the border-free Schengen area by land would have a positive effect on the economic environment both in Bulgaria and in Europe. The Bulgarian President stressed that the attraction of sustainable investments is a significant factor for labour market stability, predictability for business and the opening up of prospects in various economic sectors.
