Caretaker Bulgarian Energy Minister Vladimir Malinov on Tuesday confirmed that radioactive water did not leak during an ongoing repair of Unit 6 of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP) (Northwestern Bulgaria).

"To the best of my knowledge, the KNPP Deputy Director reassured the media last Saturday that the staff were not exposed to radioactive risk. He confirmed that radioactive water had not leaked into the Danube River. The Nuclear Regulatory Agency has been notified, and the general public is not at risk," Malinov said. He spoke to the media following a Hyundai Engineering & Construction event in Sofia.

He confirmed that he received regular updates on necessary repairs at the N-plant and asserted that Unit 6 will only be brought back on stream after the repairs are completed and its viability is confirmed.

Malinov spoke of Bulgaria's intention to expedite construction of Kozloduy Units 7 and 8, the idea being to complete them ahead of the deadlines set in a roadmap approved by Parliament. Various financing models are being explored, including 30% participation of the Bulgarian State and 70% loan financing, the Energy Minister said. Ensuring safety during construction and future safe operation remain a priority.
