Bulgaria ranks second after Romania in the number of investigations into use of EU funds managed or spent in whole or in part at national or regional level that were concluded by the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) in 2023, according to statistics contained in OLAF's 2023 report that was presented here on Tuesday.

Fourteen such investigations were conducted in Bulgaria, from which five were closed with recommendations for follow-up to the relevant national authorities. The most numerous investigations, 16, were conducted in Romania, and ten recommendations were issued on them in connection with irregularities detected.

The report shows that a total of 265 investigations were concluded in all EU Member States and other countries where EU-funded projects are implemented, and 190 new investigations were opened. OLAF recommended EUR 1.04 billion for recovery from misuse and prevented EUR 209.4 million from being lost.
