A national of North Macedonia has been detained for attempting to smuggle 21 kg of amphetamine from Bulgaria, the Sofia Appellate Prosecution Office said on Wednesday.
On June 3, Bulgarian customs inspectors on the exit lane of the Gyueshevo Checkpoint (on Bulgaria's border with North Macedonia) conducted a thoroughgoing search of the Skopje-plated Mercedes Benz car driven by the man and found 18 packets of crystals which a field test identified as amphetamine.
The Kystendil District Court, which is handling the case, told BTA that, upon conviction, the suspect faces 10 to 20 years' imprisonment and a fine ranging from BGN 100,000 to BGN 200,000.
A precautionary measure to secure his appearance will be taken shortly.
