A march in support of women's rights on the occasion of March 8, International Women's Day, took place in downtown Sofia. The event was held for the eighth consecutive year. It was organized by the Feminist Mobilisations non-governmental organisation.
The procession under the slogan "No more" started from Bulgaria Square in front of the National Palace of Culture congress centre, passed through Vitosha and Patriarch Evtimiy boulevards and ended at Independence Square.
The participants waved placards with slogans such as "We do not want flowers, we want rights", "Woman, life, freedom", "Foreign women, refugee women, you are all welcome", "Solidarity is our weapon against hatred".
Kameliya Tsenova of Feminist Mobilisations told BTA that the procession’s goal is to recall that March 8 was once celebrated as a day of struggle and there is a reason it continues to be such a holiday, even though many rights have been won over the decades, they are not being realised in reality.
"We see that women's poverty continues to be a huge problem. There are a number of feminised sectors where wages are extremely lower than the rest and this needs to change. This is just a small fraction of the problems we still need to address," she emphasized.
