A protest was held on Wednesday in central Sofia against the election of judges to the Constitutional Court from the parliamentary quota. It was organized by the Justice for All initiative.

On January 19 the National Assembly elected Borislav Belazelkov and Desislava Atanasova to the Constitutional Court for a nine-year term. The two are expected to be sworn in on January 26.

According to the protesters, the election was untransparent and unfounded.

According to the organizers of the protest, Parliament voted that the tenure of the new constitutional judges will be nine years, breaching a decision of the Constitutional Court of January 9.

“We disagree with this taking over of the judiciary by politicians,” said a representative for the protesters. According to him, the various judicial organizations must take up a position.

President Rumen Radev referred the election to the Constitutional Court and urged for the oath taking to be postponed until a ruling is rendered by the court. Vazrazhdane, the Bulgarian Socialist Party and There Is Such a People also challenged the election before the Constitutional Court.
