PM Denkov Says Sports Minister Has His Full Support, Interior Minister Headed in Right Direction

"The Sports Minister has my full support. I do not know why they want his resignation, but I have not seen a single reason for him to be critized," Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov told journalists at Sofia airport, where he welcomed the Bulgarian chess players who won the European women's title.

Denkov was responding to remarks by GERB leader Boyko Borissov, who said that Sports Minister Dimitar Iliev should leave his post.

Responding to a journalist's question, Denkov commented on Tuesday's briefing of Interior Minister Kalin Stoyanov, whose resignation was demanded by Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria following the escalation of the protest of football fans last Thursday, which led to clashes with the police and videos of police brutality emerged.

Stoyanov said he would not tolerate any form of violence, including by police officers who exceeded their powers.

"I said yesterday [Monday] that if the Minister continued to turn a blind eye and gloss over the problems, I would leave. The minister has gone in the right direction. I hope he will go all the way," said Nikolay Denkov.
