Three Romanian citizens will be given a chance for life after an organ donation procedure was realized by a medical team at a hospital in Veliko Tarnovo, the Medical Supervision Executive Agency said Friday. The coordinator of the donor situation is Dr. Sibila Marinova.

On September 28, relatives of a 76-year-old woman who fell into brain death made the decision to donate her organs. Due to the donor's medical indicators, there were no suitable recipients for transplantation in Bulgaria. Under a cooperation agreement between the Medical Supervision Executive Agency and Romania's National Transplant Agency, the liver and kidneys were provided to the Romanian side.

The Health Ministry and the Medical Supervision Executive Agency extended sincere condolences to the donor's family and thanked them for their humane gesture. Gratitude was also expressed to the teams of the medical institutions involved in the donation and transplantation process.

As of September 8, 2023, the number of Bulgarians waiting for transplantation is 859, the Agency's data shows. The waiting list for kidney transplants is 797, for liver transplants - 24, for heart transplants - 30, for lung transplants - six, for small intestine transplants - two.

As of September 8, 2023, six liver transplants, two heart transplants and 19 kidney transplants had been performed.
