Seventeen roses were planted in the rose garden behind Sofia's National Palace of Culture (NDK) on Tuesday in honour and recognition of organ donors and their relatives. The event was attended by transplantees, relatives of donors, and representatives of Executive Agency Medical Supervision (EAMS), which is behind this annual initiative for popularizing the significance of organ donation and transplantation.

EAMS head Ivanka Dineva told reporters that as per tradition, every year the number of roses planted in the rose garden equals the number of organ donors in that year. The initiative was first launched in 2020.

The rose garden behind the NDK was unveiled in 2020 by the Health Minister and EAMS at the initiative of the Association of Patients with Respiratory Failure and Lung Transplantation. The garden signifies transplantees' gratitude to donors and their families.

As at October 6, 2023, a total of 849 Bulgarians were waiting for an organ transplant, EAMS reported. This year's 17 donor situations gave 42 people a chance to live.
