President Rumen Radev has written to the Ministry of Interior to present his official refusal to remove Petar Todorov from office as Secretary General of the Ministry, Radev's Press Secretariat reported on Wednesday.

Last week, Radev said in a statement that Interior Minister Kalin Stoyanov's reasoning for the proposal to dismiss Todorov was entirely political. The President described the proposal as part of a "full-scale purge" in the institution. According to Radev, the alleged lack of organization and control of Interior Ministry activities is not supported by the reports on the Ministry's performance in 2022 and the first half of 2023, which indicate rising crime detection and clearance rates.

Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov had said that the Interior Minister had differences with the Secretary General over the coordination and planning of the Ministry's work. Minister Stoyanov blamed Todorov for what he sees as lack of organization and control of Interior Ministry activities, which brought about the death of six police officers in their line of duty over a very short period of time.

Later on Wednesday, Interior Minister Stoyanov confirmed to journalists that the President's official refusal was received. "We will continue to work with difficulty," Stoyanov commented.
