Spain firmly supports Bulgaria's accession to Schengen and works actively in that direction while presiding over the EU Council from July to December 2023, Spanish Ambassador to Bulgaria Alejandro Polanco Mata said at a meeting with Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov here on Thursday, the Government Information Service reported.

Denkov said that Bulgaria is doing everything within its power to not allow illegal migrants in the EU. This year, the authorities have prevented nearly 60,000 attempts for illegal crossing into Bulgaria. The Bulgarian Prime Minister will acquaint the EU leaders with the actions taken by his country to protect the Union's external border at the leaders' meeting that the Spanish EU Presidency organizes in Granada in early October.

The Spanish Ambassador welcomed Bulgaria's initiative to strengthen the regional connectivity with Greece and Romania. He expressed his country's readiness to help with its experience in the construction of a modern railway infrastructure along the future corridor from Thessaloniki and Kavala through Alexandroupolis, Burgas, and Varna to Constanta.
