Sending cluster munitions to Ukraine is a delicate issue from a political point of view, Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov said in an interview with Sky News on Tuesday. The US recently announced that it would supply cluster munitions to Ukraine. Bulgaria is among the more than 100 countries that have signed the Oslo Convention banning these weapons.

"We are in a full-scale war. When you have a war, treaties are important, but it is even more important to succeed on the battlefield," Denkov added.

He noted that many countries have signed the Convention on Cluster Munitions, but the US and Russia have not. “The fact that Russia has not signed means that Russia accepts that these munitions can be used and as far as I know they have already used them. If they use them, it is normal to expect that the other side can use them as well,” the Prime Minister pointed out.

The cluster munitions are detonated in the air above the target and scatter multiple small explosive devices, thus striking targets over a large area. Their use is controversial primarily because a significant number of them fall to the ground without exploding and thus pose a threat to civilians for many years after a conflict has ended.
