Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) leader Mustafa Karadayi, MRF MP Delyan Peevski and MRF deputy floor leader Hamid Hamid submitted to the National Assembly an alert to the Prosecution Office about the Bulgarian citizenship of the Russian businessman Roman Savushkin and his three sons, as he allegedly is close to Kremlin, the press center of the political party said on Wednesday.

"The alert is in connection with information publicly circulating in the media (article from July 3 on the website www.mediapool.bg with the title "Sons of a businessman close to the Kremlin may receive Bulgarian citizenship")," the MRF wrote.

The alert calls for a review of whether Russian citizen Roman Savushkin lawfully acquired Bulgarian citizenship in 2019, following media reports about his close personal and business ties to individuals close to Russian President Vladimir Putin, including Alexander Nesis, Sergey Chemezov and Dmitry Medvedev.

Another question that is sought to be answered is whether Bulgarian intermediaries were involved in obtaining the citizenship.

"Was the Interior Ministry’s and State Agency for National Security’s positive statement (if there was one) on the application for Bulgarian citizenship submitted by Roman Savushkin's sons in 2021 justified and lawful," the alert asks.

Karadayi, Peevski and Hamid explained that the need for this inquiry was conditioned by the ongoing speculations on the topic of "golden passports" and the suspicions of illegal acquisitions of Bulgarian citizenship by foreigners with the help of intermediaries, during which the required by law investments were not made.

The MRF asked for the necessary actions to be taken to protect the public interest if violations are detected during the inspection.
