A national Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) was launched by Rosen Plevneliev, who was President of Bulgaria (2012-2017), and Prof. Dimitar Dimitrov – Rector of the University of National and World Economy (UNWE) at UNWE in Sofia on Wednesday. SDSN Bulgaria is part of the global SDSN network, established by the United Nations to promote the implementation of its Sustainable Development Goals. UNWE is SDSN coordinator for Bulgaria.

Guillaume Lafortune, Vice President and Head of Paris office at the SDSN, and Prof. Phoebe Koundouri, Co-chairperson of SDSN Europe and SDSN Greece, were among the official guests at the event.

Addressing the forum, Prof. Dimitrov said that SDSN Bulgaria is a real network with partners around the world focused on achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals. “People don't realize how important it is and exactly what it requires to implement these Goals, so our job is to translate them into plans, monitoring, strategies, and training, so that everyone understands what they mean for their region, city, university. This is a huge task, and we have a responsibility to make our societies aware of it and lead them towards its implementation”, he added.

Lafortune stressed the importance of the event for Bulgaria and stressed the global importance of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. He appreciated the efforts and commitment of governments and highlighted Bulgaria's place in SDSN networks.

Prof. Koundouri said that science must be actively involved in research at global, national and regional levels in order to succeed in engaging people at all levels in implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
