Romania's security in light of Russia's deliberate and provocative violations of its airspace and international law, will be a key topic at the 80th UN General Assembly, Romania’s Foreign Ministry said in a press release.
The issue became particularly relevant after a drone violated Romania's airspace during a Russian attack on Ukraine late last week. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called for greater pressure on Russia and warned Moscow that NATO would respond decisively. US President Donald Trump signaled his readiness to impose sanctions on Russia but noted that Europe needs to match the US's actions.
Romania will be represented at the UN General Assembly by Minister Oana Toiu, who is currently on a week-long visit to the US. Toiu has already met with representatives of the US Congress to discuss strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries, as well as partnership projects in the energy sector, the visa waiver program, and a potential visit by Romanian President Nicusor Dan.
Her agenda also includes meetings with members of the Senate and the House of Representatives, Romanian students and educators, a visit to the Holocaust Memorial Museum, and participation in a roundtable at Georgetown University.
However, some Romanian experts have described the agenda as "modest," pointing out the lack of meetings with decision-makers in the US executive branch.
Commenting in Evenimentul Zilei, Stefan Popescu said: "Being in Washington without a meeting with the US Secretary of State is unfortunately a sign that more work is needed before discussions with the American side can take place about a possible visit by President Dan to the US."
