Bulgaria remains among the countries with high levels of public sector corruption, according to the Transparency International’s 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) made public on Tuesday. Bulgaria scored 43 in this year’s index, falling below the critical threshold of 50 and highlighting serious challenges in the fight against corruption. Among European Union (EU) Member States, Bulgaria ranks just ahead of Hungary, the findings show.

The CPI, which measures political corruption, indicates that corruption remains a major obstacle to good governance, democratic institutions, and sustainable economic development, Transparency International said.

The report also reveals that global corruption levels remain alarmingly high, with efforts to reduce them faltering.

More than two-thirds of the world's countries scored below 50 and the global average remains unchanged at 43. Denmark leads the ranking with 90 points, while Somalia (9), Venezuela (10), and Syria (12) are at the bottom.

Within the EU, Bulgaria continues to lag behind Europe’s average of 62.33 points. Transparency International identified the country’s biggest challenges as tackling impunity, strengthening institutions, and increasing public trust in government.
