The rule of law, democracy, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms are the pillars of prosperity and peace in Europe, said European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) Vice President Marko Bosnjak on Friday. He was addressing the first meeting of the Balkan Constitutional Forum in Sofia.

The forum lays the foundations for dialogue between judicial systems, he said and expressed his support for the initiative, designed as a platform for cooperation.

Of the draft amendments to the Bulgarian Constitution and namely the individual constitutional complaint, Bosnjak said that the issue is very important and what matters is how best to elaborate the procedure because it will have consequences for the functioning of the Constitutional Court.

Bosnjak also said that the caseload of the ECHR should be reduced because it handles dozens of thousands of complaints every year.

Bosnjak presented several cases related to the right to just judicial process set out in the European Convention on Human Rights.
