Bulgaria strongly condemns the violence against the NATO peacekeeping force in Kosovo (KFOR) and expresses full solidarity with the wounded servicemen, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs tweeted.

“We call on all parties to de-escalate. The implementation of the EU-brokered agreements remains the only way forward,” the ministry wrote.

In connection with the protest demonstrations and the escalation of social tensions in recent days in Kosovo, KFOR is carrying out tasks to ensure order and security in the area of northern Kosovo, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1244.

Currently, up to 35 Bulgarian troops are participating in the NATO operation in Kosovo, carrying out tasks related to helping improve security.

The Serbs, who are a majority in the north of Kosovo, do not recognise Kosovo's independence, which was declared in 2008. They refused to take part in local elections in April, and candidates of Albanian origin won elections in four Serb-majority municipalities on a turnout of 3.5%. Serbs have called on the Kosovo government to remove Albanian mayors from town halls and allow local administrations, funded by Belgrade, to return to their duties.
