Works Start of
Dams in
Urgent Need of Repair

Varna, on the Black Sea, August 10 (BTA) - Peter Gornovski, head of the State Agency for Metrological and Technical Surveillance (SAMTS), said here in Friday that repair works are set to start soon of dams in most urgent need of fixing, which currently number 850. The repair works can start after the cabinet allocated 500 million leva for a state-owned company established to manage dams.

All dams will be ranked according to potential risk levels and capacity.

Gornovski said that changes to the Local Self-Government Act will allow the local authorities to give over to the government by October 7, 2018 those dams which they are unable to maintain. This deadline will not be extended.

Gornovski said that SAMTS will be "extremely conservative" in respect of liquidation of dams. He said that dams were built for specific purposes and cannot be eliminated carelessly. SN/ZH
