Expert Presents Results of
Excavations in
Perperikon

Sofia, August 17 (BTA) - Archaeologist Prof. Nikolay Ovcharov presented the results of the latest excavation works in the ancient rock city of Perperikon at a BTA-hosted news conference here Friday. In his words, the Thracian royal palace and sanctuary of Perperikon is unique. It has a ceremonial throne room that is nearly 30 metres long, a temple dedicated most probably to the Eastern divinity Mitra, and a temple to the dead with adjacent 12 tombs with a crypt, which have been robbed and exist solely as architecture.

Prof. Ovcharov recalled that excavation works have been on for 19 years now in Perperikon, which was established between the late second and early first century B.C.

Until 2000 the ancient city was plunged in half-mysticism and obscurity, but the subsequent excavations managed to reveal its entire history, the expert said. It is already known that the first sanctuaries of Perperikon date back to the prehistoric age, he added.
