Bulgarian Students Win Gold and Bronze at
Informatics Olympiad in
Japan


Sofia, September 7 (BTA) - Bulgarian students won one gold and three bronze medals at the 30th International Olympiad in Informatics in Japan, said the Education Ministry. They competed among a total of 339 students from 87 countries at events held September 1 to 7.

The one gold medal went to Alexander Krustev, an 11-grader from the math school in the Black Sea city of Varna. The three bronzes went to Viktor Terziev, a 12-grader of the Sofia math school, Martin Kopchev, an 8-grader at the Gabrovo school of mathematics and natural sciences, and Radoslav Dimitrov, an 11-grader at the Plovdiv math school.

The team was managed by Emil Shelevedjiev of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and informatics teacher Anton Shikov.

The International Olympiad in Informatics started to be organized on a Bulgarian initiative back in 1989, following a proposal to UNESCO. The first edition was held in the northern town of Pravets. Ever since then, Bulgarian students have won a total of 100 medals, including 25 gold, 41 silver and 34 bronze, which ranks Bulgaria fifth in the world. RY/LN/
