Plovdiv, South Central Bulgaria, September 9 (BTA) - The 2018
World Rowing Championships (September 9-16) started here on
Sunday.

World Rowing Federation (FISA) President Jean-Christophe Rolland
 thanked the organizing committee and everybody involved in the
preparations for the event: the Bulgarian Government, the
Minister of Sports, Plovdiv Municipality and all partners.

The technical delegate for the Championships and FISA member
Mike Tanner told a news conference at the venue that the
organisation was terrific. "The rowing canal is Plovdiv's
greatest advantage, a special facility that provides all
competitors with incredible conditions," the official said,
adding that FISA expects wonderful championships in Bulgaria
this year.

A total of 950 athletes from 62 nations will take part in the
competition. They will compete in 14 Olympic, six non-Olympic
and nine para-rowing events.

Bulgaria is represented by Kristian Vasilev and Boris Yotov
(Men's Double Sculls), Lazar Penev (Lightweight Men's Single
Sculls), and Stanimir Haladzhov and Rangel Katsarski (Men's
Pair). Desislava Georgieva (Women's Single Sculls) had to drop
out at the last minute as she underwent surgery. SN/LG
