Bulgarian Academy of Sciences,
Institute of
Meteorology Agree to Part Ways, Work Out Technicalities

Sofia, September 18 (BTA) - The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS), its Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology and the Education Ministry signed Tuesday an agreement whereby the BAS and the Meteorology Institute agree to part ways and work out the technicalities, said the Confederation of independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB). The agreement was reached with the CITUB mediation.

Weathermen also call off their protest alert.

For months now, the Meteorology Institute has been seeking to leave BAS over inadequate financing, and to possibly join the Education Ministry structure. BAS was initially reluctant to let it go but later agreed, leaving only some technicalities as moot points.

Under the agreement, the Education Ministry will prepare and submit to the government a draft agreement on the establishment of a research institute as part of its structure, to take over all functions and assets of the Meteorology Institute.

By the end of the current financial year, the Institute of Meteorology will use the budget subsidy, as well as own revenues as per the approved Institute budget.

BAS agrees to consider candidates for acting director of the Meteorology Institute put forward by the Institute General Assembly and propose to the BAS President to appoint one of them.

The last Meteorology Institute Director was fired by the BAS General Meeting amid weathermen's protests and the proposed replacement was seen by the Institute staff as an insult. LY/LN/
