towards Broader Bilateral Cooperation

Sofia, September 20 (BTA) - The parliaments of Bulgaria and Azerbaijan are ready to work together and assist each other so as to broaden the bilateral cooperation in various areas. They play a significant role in the implementation of the declaration on strategic partnership signed by Bulgaria and Azerbaijan, National Assembly Chair Tsveta Karayancheva and Azerbajian's Milli Majlis Chairman Ogtay Asadov agreed on Thursday, the National Assembly press centre reported.

Karayancheva heads a Bulgarian parliamentary delegation to Azerbaijan on the occasion of the Milli Majlis' 100th anniversary. On the delegation are Bulgaria-Azerbaijan Friendship Group Chairman Hamid Hamid and Deputy Chairman Dimiter Georgiev.

Asadov said at the meeting that they are considering deepening of the parliamentary cooperation with Bulgaria as a basis and very important prerequisite for the development of ever more active bilateral relations.

Karayancheva said that there is significant potential for cooperation with Azerbaijan in the area of energy and supply of energy resources. New opportunities in the bilateral cooperation in the energy sector could emerge from the potential participation of Azerbaijan in Bulgaria's gasification for household purposes, she added.

Later on Thursday, Karayancheva gave a public lecture at the Baku Slavic University. She said that the cooperation between Bulgaria and Azerbaijan in the area of education and culture should be developed at the same speed as the economic and political one. She noted the huge contribution of the Baku Slavic University and its Rector Nurlana Aliyeva to Bulgarian language and culture becoming ever more popular in Azerbaijan.

"Bulgarian politicians will strive to work towards the creation of the necessary conditions for our two peoples and young people to become ever closer, to get to know the culture, traditions, nature, and sights with which Bulgaria and Azerbaijan can be proud of," Karayancheva also said in her lecture.

Also on Thursday, the Bulgarian parliamentary delegation visited the Bulgarian Language and Cultural Centre with the Baku Slavic University, unveiled in 2004 to develop the bilateral cultural ties and improve the education process in the Bulgarian Studies programme.
