President Says Elderly Bulgarians
Have All Reasons to Demand Long-term Government
Policy to Improve Their Quality of Life

Sofia, October 1 (BTA) - In an address on the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons, October 1, President Rumen Radev said many elderly people in Bulgaria live in poverty, deprivation and isolation, and they have all reasons to demand a long-term policy to improve their quality of life.

The President is patron of the observances of this day, said his Press Secretariat.

"Occasional outbursts of concern can bring to short-lived answers to your problems but they cannot give you the security you deserve. I am aware that a change is needed in the attitudes about the place of older people in society. Keeping you active must be a priority in formulating the future social and health policy," said the President.

He pointed out that the ageing of the population calls for adequate government solutions today.

Radev said that "mutual confidence and shared values are the building blocks for the unity our society needs so that every single person feels the support of society". "Healing and strengthening the social tissue starts with the care for children and older persons," the President said in his address. LI/LN/
