Bulgaria Elected
to UN Human Rights
Council

Sofia, October 13 (BTA) - Bulgaria was elected on Friday, during
the 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly in New York, as a
member of the Human Rights Council during the 2019-2021 period,
the Foreign Ministry reported. One hundred and eighty of the 188
member states who voted supported Bulgaria's bid.

This is the first time Bulgaria is a candidate to the Human
Rights Council, and its election serves as a recognition of its
active policy in the field of human rights on both national and
global level.

Bulgaria has committed to aid the independence of the UN human
rights-related structures, as well as to work for children's
rights protection, gender equality, disabled people's rights,
the creation of tolerant societies, etc., while taking into
account the commitments to implementing the Sustainable
Development Goals 2030.

Created by the General Assembly in March 2006 as the principal
United Nations entity dealing with human rights, the Human
Rights Council comprises 47 elected Member States.  On the basis
of equitable geographical distribution, Council seats are
allocated to the five regional groups as follows:  African
States, 13 seats; Asia-Pacific States, 13 seats; Eastern
European States, 6 seats; Latin American and Caribbean States, 8
seats; and Western European and other States, 7 seats.
