Low Water Level Continues to Hamper Navigation
in Bulgarian-Romanian Section
of Danube


Rousse, on the Danube, October 30 (BTA) - About 20 river shallows hamper navigation in the Bulgarian-Romanian section of the Danube, Ivan Zhekov, Director of the Executive Agency for Maritime Administration's Directorate River Supervision - Ruse, informed BTA. The Danube water levels remain critically low.

The current situation called for imposing draft restrictions, which leads to losses for ship companies as they cannot use the full capacity of their vessels.

Zhehov said that normally 25 ships visit Rousse Port per day on average but this month that number went down to 8 per day.

He also pointed out that ships get stuck in the Bulgarian section of the Danube river periodically but they don't hinder navigation: the other vessels only need to be extra cautious when they pass them.

The water level near Ruse today is minus 38 cm from the zero mark and is expected to drop another 2 cm in the next two days.

The river levels have already gone up in the German and Hungarian sections. LN/DT
