A commemorative ceremony in Sofia marked the Day of Thrace and the 112th anniversary of the Siege of Adrianople. The commemoration began with a funeral prayer in the St. Nicholas of Sofia the New. After the prayer, wreaths and flowers were laid at the monument of Exarch Anthim I. The commemorative ceremony took place in front of the Memorial of Adrianople.

Official guests of the ceremony were Vice President Iliana Iotova, Deputy Mayor of Sofia Municipality Ivan Vassilev, and Chairman of the Union of Thracian Societies in Bulgaria (UTSB) Krassimir Premyanov.

The Vice President pointed out that in these extremely anxious days and months in which we live, the UTSB transmits a call that is not heard by Bulgarian institutions - a call for unity, for memory and return to Bulgarian history. “Today, we all bow our heads in tribute to the heroism of Edirne's volunteers and warriors, and to the memory of the thousands of Thracian refugees,” she added.

The Chairman of the UTSB explained that March 26 is celebrated as the Day of Thrace because something great of the Bulgarian spirit and consciousness is encoded in it. Premyanov noted that when the Thracian Bulgarians had to give their lives for their homeland, they performed miracles of bravery. In his words, this is a day of triumph for the Bulgarian warriors and the Thracian volunteers, and for this sacrifice to be meaningful, people cannot afford to forget anyone or anything from our history.

The Day of Thrace is celebrated on the day of the Bulgarian army's victory at Adrianople in 1913. After nearly six months of siege and 24-hour non-stop attack, the impregnable fortress of Adrianople fell. Its conquest achieved military-political and strategic results that led to the end of the Balkan War and the liberation of the Bulgarians who remained under Ottoman rule.
