The first two griffon vultures that hatched in 2024 at the Stara Zagora Zoo have been released into the wild in the Kresna Gorge, the press centre of Stara Zagora Municipality said on Wednesday.
They added that a colony of griffon and black vultures has already been formed near the village of Rakitna, Simitli Municipality, and provides the necessary conditions for the species. They also pointed out that they are being cared for by the Wild Flora and Fauna Fund, which manages the feeding site and carries out field activities in the area under the Life for the Bearded Vulture project.
The young birds are the offspring of one of the griffon vulture pairs at the Stara Zagora Zoo and were hatched in the incubator of the Green Balkans Wildlife Rescue Centre. The centre will also monitor the condition and location of the two griffon vultures with satellite transmitters, which were purchased through a donation campaign, as the news of their hatching attracted great public interest.
