Afforestation is a way of thinking, a culture that must be built, Vratsa Mayor Kalin Kamenov told BTA on Friday. He joined the Green Vratsa campaign, which aims to plant 2,000 trees and shrubs in Vratsa. The new trees are planted in several places in the town with the help of about 1,000 students from Vratsa schools.
Kamenov stated that the idea of students participating is for each school to "adopt" a specific place in town and take care of it. "So in years to come, when today's children grow up and have children of their own, they will be proud of this area that is theirs, as it were, and that they helped to nurture," he said.
The mayor argues that it is very important for all residents to join forces if they want to live in a green and clean city. "Just as we take care of every child to grow up, we must also take care of nature," Kamenov pointed out, adding that planting is the easy part, with the responsible part being the growing and watering process. "We must learn that no one owes us anything. We should not just look out the windows and give advice on Facebook about what needs to be done, but be the example we want to be for our children,” he stressed.
Kamenov emphasized that thanks to the Green Vratsa campaign every district in Vratsa has its own smell from the flowers that have been planted, and that the campaign aims not only to afforest, but to engage people to take care of the environment so that they can leave something behind for generations to come.
