site.btaGrowth of Support for Bulgaria's EU Membership Registered by Opinion Poll

Support for Bulgaria's membership in the European Union (EU) increased from 57% to 61% between September 2024 and February 2025, according to a survey by Alpha Research. These percentages almost equal the historical highs when it comes to support for this country's EU membership, Alpha Research noted. Negative opinions remain at four times lower (15%) and those hesitating to express a position are around a quarter.
The survey was conducted between February 20-28, 2025 among 1,000 adults.
The new situation with uncertainties about the effectiveness and future of NATO is having a slightly greater impact on public attitudes, according to the survey. Support for Bulgaria's NATO membership, which has been on the rise since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, continues to dominate, but there is more hesitation about whether this alliance will be able to protect this country in the event of armed conflict.
Asked about the start of President Trump's new term in office and the significant differences that have emerged in US and European foreign policy, and the positions to which Bulgaria should stick to more, over half of respondents (59%) said that "Bulgaria as part of the EU should support the common positions of the Union and reinforce its unity and strength". The opposite position - that Bulgaria should adhere to the positions of the USA, as they are stronger - was advocated by 14% of the respondents. The remaining 27% said they could not express an opinion. The only voters among whom support for the US position in its relations with the EU dominates, albeit by a small margin, are those of the Vazrazhdane party (39% vs 34%). All the others, regardless of the statements of their leaders, defend the thesis that Bulgaria should be on the side of Europe and contribute to its unity and strength, the survey also shows.
The countries that show the greatest efforts for Europe to start actively defending its positions and to lead the process of achieving a lasting peace in Ukraine also meet overwhelming approval - Germany enjoys 85% trust, France - 78%, Italy - 77%, the UK - 73%. Positive attitude towards the US is declared by 52%, and towards Russia by 48% of the adult residents of the country, the polling agency added.
