An area of 10 hectares in the municipalities of Zimnicea and Svishtov will be afforested in order to create natural barriers that will help retain water and prevent erosion, the press centre of Svishtov Municipality said on Tuesday.

The initiative is part of the GREENFOR cross-border project for green infrastructure and afforestation initiatives. The project aims to reduce the risk of floods by implementing green infrastructure and afforestation measures in vulnerable areas of Romania and Bulgaria.

The project, which has a duration of 24 months, has been proposed for funding under the Interreg VI-A Romania-Bulgaria Programme. The total budget of the project is EUR 1.4 million, of which Zimnicea Municipality will manage EUR 816.000, while Svishtov Municipality will manage EUR 600.000.

Among the planned activities are the purchase of specialized equipment, such as tractors, irrigation equipment and vehicles to maintain the forested areas, as well as the installation of information centres in Zimnicea and Svishtov, which will provide access to information on flood prevention measures and the benefits of forests in reducing climate risks.

In addition to increasing the security of the population in Zimnicea and Svishtov, GREENFOR will also strengthen cross-border cooperation between Romania and Bulgaria, facilitating the exchange of experience and the implementation of common solutions to reduce climate risks.
