Reports Rising Trend of
Child Labour in Bulgaria
Sofia, June 11 (BTA) - In connection with June 12, World Day Against Child Labour, the Bulgarian General Labour Inspectorate (GLI) reported Tuesday in a press release that there is a constant increase of child labour in Bulgaria in the past years. The International Labour Organization reported that children in employment around the world total 152 million, and 7 out of 10 children work in agriculture.
Bulgarian legislation is synchronized with the international laws regarding child protection from labour, according to which underage persons may work only with a permission from the Labour Inspectorate, for seven hours a day and without working night shifts or overtime.
The GLI recalls that requests for such a permission are submitted through the employer and may be submitted and received online.
In 2018, a total of 8,501 requests were submitted for hiring children under 18 years. A total of 8,238 permissions were issued, 205 of which were for children under 16 years. A total of 116 violations were found in connection with hiring underage persons without a permission from the Labour Inspectorate.
In Bulgaria, the biggest share of underage persons work in restaurants, hospitality and retail. RY/TH
