site.btaBulgaria’s Largest Illegal Weapons Cache Seized in Nationwide Anti-Mafia Operation

The largest cache of illegal weapons and ammunition ever discovered in Bulgaria was seized during a specialized police operation by the Directorate General for Combating Organized Crime (DGCOC), the Ministry of Interior's press service said here on Wednesday.

As part of the operation, officers from the counterterrorism unit uncovered a specially equipped workshop used for modifying weapons.

The anti-mafia operation conducted on December 3 covered several areas, including Smolyan region (South Bulgaria) and the cities of Sofia, Vratsa (Northwest Bulgaria) and Shumen (Northeast Bulgaria). Two men were arrested and charged as part of the operation, which was led by the Smolyan Regional Prosecution Office.

Details of the DGCOC and the prosecution service's special operation will be shared in a briefing at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 5, at the courthouse in Smolyan. Speakers will include Deputy Director of DGCOC Boyan Raev, head of the Counterterrorism Department Borislav Traykov, and Smolyan Regional Prosecutor Nedko Simov.
