Bulgaria's gross external debt amounted to EUR 43,728 million (43.7% of GDP) at end-August 2024, up by EUR 983.2 million (2.3%) from a year earlier (EUR 42,745 million, 45.1% of GDP), the Bulgarian National Bank said Wednesday.
The short-term liabilities totalled EUR 7,738 million (17.7% of the gross debt, 7.7% of GDP), up by EUR 280.3 million (3.8%) from a year earlier (EUR 7,457 million, 17.4% of the debt, 7.9% of GDP).
The long-term liabilities amounted to EUR 35,990 million (82.3% of the gross debt, 35.9% of GDP) at end-August 2024, up by EUR 703 million (2%) from a year earlier (EUR 35,287 million, 82.6% of the total debt, 37.3% of GDP).
The gross external debt of the General Government sector totalled EUR 10,234 million (10.2% of GDP) at end-August 2024, up by EUR 805.3 million (8.5%) from a year earlier (EUR 9,429 million, 10% of GDP).
The external liabilities of the central bank stood at EUR 1,921 million (1.9% of GDP), down by EUR 175.6 million (8.4%) from end-August 2023 (EUR 2,096 million, 2.2% of GDP).
The external liabilities of other Monetary Financial Institutions (banks and money market funds) totalled EUR 6,376 million (6.4% of GDP), up by EUR 496.7 million (8.4%) from a year earlier (EUR 5,880 million, 6.2% of GDP).
Other sectors' external debt totalled EUR 12,225 million (12.2% of GDP), increasing by EUR 361.6 million (3%) from end-August 2023 (EUR 11,864 million, 12.5% of GDP).
Intercompany lending amounted to EUR 12,970 million (12.9% of GDP) at end-August 2024, decreasing by EUR 504.7 million (3.7%) from a year earlier (EUR 13,475 million, 14.2% of GDP). It accounted for the largest share ( 29.7%) of the external debt at end-August 2024, down from 31.5% in end-August 2023.
