There is no tension among staff at the Southwest Hospital, which has branches in Petrich and Sandanski, said manager Dr. Iliya Tonev responding to a statement by the Zashtita National Trade Union that the medics are preparing civil disobedience and a blockade of the Bulgarian-Greek border because their wages have not been adjusted in more than three years.

Tonev said that nearly full agreement has been reached on provisions of the collective labour agreement with the staff, which should be signed Friday. The manager said that an agreement had been reached on a 15% wage increase for all medical staff. Compensation for night work will also be increased, he added.

"I am surprised why such an impression is created. On the contrary. There are normal negotiations going on between the hospital management and the three unions that are represented at Southwestern Hospital for the preparation and signing of a collective labour agreement, and almost all the issues of contention have been agreed between the parties," the manager said.

According to him, the situation in the hospital has not changed and it is operating normally. Tonev also said that he did not find any reasons for protest actions by the medical staff.
