The Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan Daniil of Sofia presided over a holy liturgy on the occasion of the 290th anniversary of the ascension of grand-martyr Simeon of Samokov as a metropolitan. Patriarch Daniil was the guest of honour at the Samokov holiday, which began on August 15 and will continue until August 21 in celebration of the memory of Saint Simeon of Samokov.

Earlier on Saturday, Patriarch Daniil bowed before the relics of the saint. He was welcomed by the Mayor of the Municipality of Samokov, Angel Dzhorgov, and clergymen from Samokov and Sofia.

Patriarch Daniil said that grand-martyr Simeon lived for the people and was a great example for all.

The Patriarch also held a service in the courtyard of the temple, and hundreds of lay people flocked to ask for a blessing.

Representatives of the Samokov clergy, as well as Samokov Municipality Mayor Dzhorgov, thanked Patriarch Daniil for his presence and presented him with gifts.

The event continued with an amateur folklore concert. Dzhorgov said that Samokov is a city of traditions, as the Municipality has 27 community centres with about 60 folklore groups that preserve the Bulgarian folklore spirit.
