Sofia Hosts
Balkan Security
Forum

Sofia, December 13 (BTA) - Sofia hosted an international security forum on Friday. It was unveiled by US Ambassador Herro Mustafa and was attended by Department of State Assistant Secretary Denise Natali, who leads the American delegation.

Ambassador Mustafa said that without integration of all countries in the region, Europe would be weaker. No country is isolated from extremism and radicalization, the problems spread across borders because of the mobility of people, the Ambassador said, and praised Bulgaria for following the priorities of the EU agenda and for what it achieved during its EU Council Presidency.

According to the US Ambassador, corruption is one of the region's problems, which hinders economic growth and makes radicalization and extremism possible.

Interior Minister Mladen Marinov said that real-time information exchange is very intensive. A multidisciplinary approach is required, as well as a high-level international effort. Bulgarian law-enforcers keep track of the transnational crime networks, money transfers and Internet propaganda, he explained. Marinov is in favour of developing an early warning system even at the level of hate speech. He said Bulgaria is a low-risk country, no Bulgarians have been identified as members of organizations involved in military conflicts or as preparing such acts.

North Macedonia's Interior Minister Oliver Spasovski said all countries worldwide clash with dangerous forms.

Albanian Deputy Interior Minister Romina Kuko said that all countries in the region face common problems and threats. That is why countries outside the EU should join it as soon as possible so as to work even more easily to counter such threats.

Kosovo Interior Minister Ekrem Mustafa said that ways to fight extremism remain the main challenge to the Western Balkans./NV/BR/DD
